James first started practicing lighting at the King of Wessex Community School, Cheddar. Starting as lighting crew and board operator James worked his way up to Technical Director and Lighting Designer. After finishing his A levels James went on to study at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. While at LIPA James has work on numerous show in a wide verity of roles surmising in three full lighting designs in the Institutes two public performance spaces. At the end of his second year he designed The Guid Sisters, directed by Jacqui Somerville, in the Sennheiser Studio Theatre. In his final year he designed I Love You Because, directed by Dr. Nick Philips, a promenade piece in the Sennheiser Studio Theatre and Daisy Pulls it Of, directed by Abigail Anderson in the Paul McCartney Auditorium.

During his time at the LIPA James developed an interest in sound and has worked on numerous productions required both live sound and playback. Since starting sound James a worked on many productions in a full range of sound roles. The most notable of these being sound No.2 on Ben Elton and Andrew Lloyd Webbers new musical The Boys in the Photograph, and Sound designer on Our Finest Hour, a new musical about Liverpool in the second world war written by a third year dance student.
